Our Mission
The mission of the Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club is to inspire and empower young people to realize their full potential as productive and responsible citizens. The Boys
& Girls Club values providing quality educational and recreational experiences to all children and youth from the communities of Northeast Los Angeles. For over 60 years, the Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club has accomplished this goal by providing a safe place for children to call their own during non-school hours.

History

The Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club was founded by a group of Lincoln Heights community activists in 1944 and was originally named the Los Angeles Times Boys Club. In 1950, The Times Charities, under the
direction of Philip Chandler, dedicated the 33,000 square-foot facility, including an Olympic-sized swimming pool, gym, locker room, weight room, games-room, stage, arts & crafts area, playground and administrative offices.  Many of the top civic leaders of Los Angeles during this era became involved in the making of The Los Angeles Times Boys Club. Norman Chandler, then President of the Times-Mirror Company, Fletcher Bowron, Mayor of Los Angeles, Roger W. Jessup, Supervisor of Los Angeles County, Earl Warren, Governor of California, attended the dedication ceremony in 1950.

The Los Angeles Times Boys Club became The Los Angeles Boys & Girls Club in 1990 -- one of the first to serve young women in the national organization.  The Club continues to serve the children, youth and families of Lincoln Heights as well as those in the wider North East Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Dodgers have played an important role in helping to develop the Club throughout the years with their continual support, becoming one of our prime sponsors.

Over the years, the Club, located at 2635 Pasadena Avenue, has
provided thousands of young people with positive, structured after-school programs. While providing children with a caring staff and exciting, diverse activities, the Club extends its impact to reach entire families by enabling parents to focus on building careers, while assuring that their children are in a safe, nurturing environment.  Club alumni include business owners, civic leaders, youth development professionals, corporate executives and community activists.
